Iconic 80’s legends Nik Kershaw and Kim Wilde make a staggering combination for punters who adore their music and for those who have retro nostalgia as they weren’t allowed to see them when they were young in the 1980’s, tonight is their night. Both musicians were huge chart toppers and both are still played in clubs around the world. There are punters of all varieties - boy meets boy, solo boy, boy meets girl, girl meets boy, children and the tragics, those dressed up in fluoro and flashing lights. Ok, so they’re not really tragic, they are just doing some human do.
Tonight at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda,Melbourne, the stage is set and the crowd is ready. I spoke to many punters who
had been to every show down the east coast, understandably as Wilde hasn’t hit
our shores for a headline tour since 1994.
Nik plays to a crowd in rapture. They just love
him. I admit I wasn’t that excited about seeing him as I wasn’t a huge fan but
that has changed now. His vocals are amazing, I know more songs that I thought
(funny how that happens) and the show was great. For a short man, he stands
tall. Playing songs in his set such as Wide Boys, Human racing, Dancing Girls,
Wouldn’t It Be Good and I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me. Punters were out of
their seats and lapping up the set.
Kim enters after a short break and unleashes her
set to the adored audience. I’m sure there were many bacchanalian gatherings
around me as fans met fans. Opening with Chequered Love she launches into song
after song and I can safely say she still has got the voice. We see that Nik is
her guitarist and we learn that her brother is on stage playing guitar and his
daughter is backup singer – and boy does she prance around stage, she’s got it
going and she does it good! I felt like yelling out “You go girl”!
The crowd simply love the show and some dancing
favourites are played, You Keep Me Hanging On, If I Can’t Have You and a cover
of The Divinyls – I Touch Myself (perfectly done, thank you Kim). Kids In
America is a big hit and lastly she plays the P!nk cover, Try.
